Loyalist Burial Site Plaque Project

Bicentennial branch is currently endeavouring to locate the final resting places of the original Loyalist settlers in Essex County and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. Where we are permitted, we will erect a sign as shown here, to identify the Loyalist burial sites. The majority of them were buried on their farms, because there were very few cemeteries in this area in the early 1800s. As you can no doubt appreciate, the Loyalists’ original farms and lands have changed hands multiple times over the past 200 years, which adds to our challenges in pinpointing their precise burial sites.

As our branch successfully identifies and installs signage on local Loyalists’ burial sites, we will post information here about their backgrounds and the new lives that they forged in southwestern Ontario. Be sure to visit this page again for updates.
