Those who have one or more Loyalist ancestors -- as many as one in eight Canadians as well as a large number of Americans -- can obtain a certificate attesting to their Loyalist roots by proving their ancestry genealogically.

United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada

The United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada was incorporated by an Act of Parliament on May 27, 1914. This evolved from the initial celebrations to celebrate the Centennial of the arrival of the Loyalists in Canada in 1883 and 1884. A few years later, in the 1890's, several local Loyalist groups formed to preserve the heritage which was disappearing. These groups in turn realized that the Loyalist heritage was national in scope, from the numerous descendants in the Maritimes through the mix of English and French in Quebec to the Ontario lands so influenced by Loyalist settlement to the Prairies and Pacific, frontiers where Loyalists and their descendants helped explore and populate. Hence the UELAC.

The UELAC, which provides some coordination and direction on national programs and activities, is an umbrella over the branches which really do most of the Loyalist activities. For more information about the Association, visit the web site at www.uelac.org.
