Impact of the UELAC Scholarship

Did you know that UELAC provides scholarship support to postgraduate students? The UELAC Loyalist Scholarship provides support to young people who are currently enrolled in a program of graduate study and have a heart for history.

Two scholarships of $2,500.00 are offered each year to qualified candidates undertaking a program in relevant Loyalist history research. With your financial support, we can do more. Your donations will have a direct impact on education and research in the field of Loyalist studies.

Comments from UELAC Scholarship Recipients

“I want to thank the UELAC again for their very generous assistance which allowed me to travel to archives throughout Canada and the United States. Additionally I have been flattered with many kind invitations to speak to branches and share my work in progress, which was always fun and led to some very illuminating discussions.”
– Tim Compeau, UELAC Loyalist Scholar 2008

“Many thanks, again, for your generosity. I cannot wait (!) to get over to Halifax. After visiting Fredericton and the Bay of Fundy, I’m thoroughly looking forward to seeing more of Canada. (I’ve always got an eye on potential job openings, too…)”
– Christopher Minty, UELAC Loyalist Scholar 2012

“In the 2011-2012 academic year, the support of the UELAC Graduate Scholarship has provided me with the financial flexibility to acquire resources from archives that have costly reproduction or photocopying fees and contribute to the payment of my tuition fees. I am very grateful for the support of the United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada.”
– Denise McGuire, UELAC Loyalist Scholar 2011

“I have recently been awarded a United Empire Loyalist Scholarship that will enable me to purchase a myriad of source materials, ranging from probate records to Todd Braisted’s latest text, Bergen County Voices (2012). This incredibly generous award from the UELAC will therefore enable me to efficiently maximise the efficacy of my current research schedule and enable me to achieve the ambitious goals I have set myself with this Ph.D.”
– Christopher Minty, UELAC Loyalist Scholar 2012

“This scholarship has meant so much for my research and I know I wouldn’t have been able to travel for some of my more important source collections without the support. I am so proud to be one of the UELAC scholarship holders and I absolutely cannot wait for December to defend this hard work. As soon as the dissertation is approved by the university reader I will have a copy sent to you.”
– Stephanie Seal Walters, UELAC Loyalist Scholar 2016

In 2018, Dr. Sophie Jones passed the PhD Viva – oral examination, successfully defending her doctoral dissertation. Sophie shared the good news on social media, extending “huge thanks” to the United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada, along with other organizations, “who have all provided generous financial assistance & invaluable access to the expertise of their communities.”
– Sophie Jones, UELAC Loyalist Scholar 2016

“I am heavy in the process of writing my dissertation proposal, which is a 35-ish page paper outlining my proposed research. I will then defend this at some point over the Spring term. Once the proposal defense is complete, I can then work on the dissertation. I will also be working on a few living history events over the upcoming year, if they fit around my research trip to Nova Scotia. Thank you so much for your continued support!”
– Kelly Grant, UELAC Loyalist Scholar 2018
