Speaker!

Dominion President Sue Morse-Hines

Topic: “Why Family History?

Sue will explore why she began her research; what kept her going; and some of the twists, turns and stories along the journey.

Sue Morse-Hines was born in Southwestern Ontario, in what was once the railway capital of Canada, or more accurately, at what is now known as the St. Thomas Airport. Following WWII, the new hospital was not quite finished and the old one was filled with returning military personnel. As a result, the maternity ward was moved to a hanger at the airport.

She is the oldest of three children, and has a degree from the University of Western Ontario. Her career has been spent in the area of child welfare.

Over the past 50 years she has worked on her family history. Both sides of her family have roots deep in America going back to 1620 at Plymouth, MA; 1635 at Newburyport, MA; and 1640 on Nantucket, MA, With assistance from her brother she has plans to publish five books. Some of the family names are: Baldwin, Bartlett, Barnum, Bonser, Buck, Carpenter, Cartwright, Cook, Dowling, Edison, Gillett, McLain, Morse, Ogden, Sanford, Swaine, White, Williams, and a few dozen more.

Her involvement with the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada began when she joined the Grand River Branch in 2000. With the assistance of Doris Lemon she became an active member joining the executive, serving as newsletter editor; VP and President. She served as Central West Counsellor when Bonnie Schepers was Central West VP; and stepped up to VP when Bonnie became Dominion VP. Sue became Dominion President in June of this year.

Sue would like to see the UELAC grow its membership; knowing that looking forward is the best option since what has been done in the past no longer appears to be enough to entice membership. Her vision for her Presidency is best captured in one of her favourite quotes:

Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.” — Sir. Winston Churchill
